A new European research programme is treating circular furniture as an operational challenge, not merely a materials question. For furniture dealers, the useful signal is clear: repair, reuse, refurbishment and new service models depend on knowing what was delivered, where it is and what has happened to it since installation.
The EU-funded FRANCESCA project started in November 2025 and runs until October 2028. According to its official CORDIS project record, it has a total budget of about €5.39 million and covers the complete furniture lifecycle: design and delivery, use and maintenance, and post-use activities such as refurbishment, remanufacturing and redistribution.
Why this circular furniture investment matters to dealers
The project combines circular design, alternative materials, business models and Digital Product Passports. That combination matters because no single intervention makes furniture circular. A repairable chair still needs to be identified. A take-back promise still needs a location, owner and condition. A refurbishment service still needs a workflow, a commercial decision and evidence of what was changed.
The European Commission’s ESPR working plan for 2025–2030 also identifies furniture as a priority product group. The detailed furniture requirements are not yet final. Dealers should therefore avoid presenting assumptions as law. The practical direction, however, is already visible: lifecycle performance and product information will become more important across the value chain.
Circularity starts after project handover
Most project data is rich before delivery and fragmented afterwards. The quotation may contain manufacturer, configuration, finish, quantity and price. Installation files may contain floors and rooms. Service requests later arrive through email, telephone or a photograph. When those records are disconnected, every repair, move or take-back request starts with reconstruction.
A usable circular operation needs an installed-base record that survives project closure. At minimum, dealers should preserve:
- customer, site, floor and room;
- the delivered product and its actual configuration;
- installation date, warranty and relevant documents;
- condition, moves, repairs and replaced parts;
- reuse, storage, resale or disposal decisions.
This is the operational foundation of furniture management. It turns a closed project into a record that commercial, service and sustainability teams can keep using.
Three lessons for a circular furniture service model
1. Import project data before it disappears
Do not wait for a circularity request to build the asset file. Capture the delivered configuration and location while project data is still complete. A structured project data import is more reliable than a later site survey and reduces manual work.
2. Connect product identity to operational history
A future product passport can describe a product, but the dealer still needs the customer-specific context. Linking identity to location, condition and service history is what makes the information useful for maintenance, warranty, reuse and replacement decisions.
3. Give customers a practical route back to the dealer
Circular services need demand as well as data. A dealer portal gives customers a structured way to report damage, request moves, review their inventory and discuss reuse. That keeps the dealer involved after delivery and turns lifecycle support into a repeatable service.
What dealers can prepare now
Start with one recently completed project and test whether your team can answer five questions without opening old email chains: what was delivered, where is it, what condition is it in, what service has been performed and what is the next realistic lifecycle option? The gaps reveal which data and workflows need attention.
The broader lesson from the European investment is not that every dealer needs a research programme. It is that circular furniture becomes commercially workable only when design information, installed assets and service processes remain connected. Dealers that build that operational layer now will be better prepared for customer demands, new service models and future product requirements.
